Social studies exhibition Thurzo House
The
social science exposition of the Museum of Central Slovakia in Banska Bystrica is situated in one of
the most beautiful and most typical houses of the historic heart of the town in the Square of the
Slovak National Uprising. The original gothic houses, the so-called "Mittelhaus", were at the turn
of the 15th and 16th century acquired by the Thurzo family, an entrepreneur family of great
importance, who, together with the Fugger family, bankers from Augsburg, created die Thurzo-Fugger
copper company. This production and business enterprise was supplying with me copper from Banska
Bystrica me markets all over Europe. The house was reconstructed into its present day form in the
second half of the 16th century, when many elements inspired by the Italian Renaissance appeared on
the front of the building (e.g. the sgraffito on the facade). After a monument reconstruction of the
building damaged by ravages of time and the events of WWII, the social science exposition focusing
on the historic changes of me region of Banska Bystrica from the oldest times of the stone age on,
through the Middle Ages to the modem age till the beginnings of me 20s' century was opened in the
building in 1958. In 12 rooms the museum offers to the public rich amounts of archeological
exhibits, medieval arms, coins and copies of historic documents. A special place is devoted to
gothic art, the mining, guilds, crafts and manufactures. A substantial part of the second floor is a
display of bourgeois
furniture and ethnographic material. Special attention should be paid to the
so-called Green Hall (Zelena sien) with a preserved part of fresco embellishment from me second half
of the 15th century, to the wooden joist ceiling from the end of the 15th century and to the
renaissance lunette vaulting with the stucco embellishment.

The Central Slovakian Nature Banska Bystrica-Radvan, The Tihanyi Castle

The
natural historical exposition of the Museum, of Central Slovakia is situated in the Tihanyi Castle
in Banska Bystrica-Radvan. The Tihanyi Castle, named after the original owners, was originally a
ground level building of the Renaissance style built in the first half of 17th century. The remnants
of this original building conserved itself in the north-western part of the building. In 1819 the
building was for the last time extensively reconstructed and became a Classicistic style house and
the next modifications resulted in me Neo-Renaissance expression, in 1972 it was decreed the Ancient
Cultural Monument and in 1989, after die complex reconstruction of the monument, it was conveyed to
the Museum of Central Slovakia.

The
natural historical exposition affords a rounded-off image of the Central Slovakian natural
situation. It is divided into 8 parts presenting the countryside of this region. There are typical
illustrations of the natural systems with the sketches of the ecological relations among the
elements of nature presented in each part. The information about the conservation of nature and
environment complete the problems of nature. The audio-visual halt, in which special natural
historical programmes and other recent reports are presented, is linked up to the exposition. There
are separate exhibitions installed in the two ground-floor rooms.
